Conference for Wind Power Drives 2019

Highlights:

  • Moving towards an agile and model based product development process
  • Key technologies – power density of gearboxes and innovative main bearings

The Center of Wind Power Drives (CWD) and the Institute for Machine Elements and Systems Engineering (MSE) were glad to welcome 450 international experts to the Drive Train Technology Conference as well as to the Conference for Wind Power Drives 2019.

Core issues of the conference were bearing technologies, tribology, mobile machinery, drive train and generator technologies of wind turbines as well as wind 4.0. The preliminary plenary session, with the topic agile product development processes, demonstrated that based on the digitalisation and the progressive efficiency of computerized developing tools (CAx) significant changes can be expected in that field. The Internet of Things (IoT) and application in the industry 4.0 provide such a big flood of data, that its organisation and use doesn’t seem possible without close linking to well structured, digital product models. The research field Systems Engineering (SE) of the MSE and the CWD has pursued the vision of shaping the conversion of product development towards digital and physically motivated model based processes.  The goal is not only to make the development of Smart Products and Smart Services of increasing complexity more controllable, but also to shorten the development processes and to reduce the required costs.

Another forward-looking topic concerning the power density of wind turbine gearboxes as well as the development of plain bearings was analyzed in various case studies during the conference: The constantly growing cost pressure defines the day-to-day business of producers of wind turbines and its components more and more. The significant increase of the power density of gearboxes shaped the conference’s discussions. In this context the producers didn’t only use the advantages of plain bearings for their gearboxes but also for their rotor bearings. The patented development of a conical plain bearing at the CWD, which has been presented at the conference this year, permits a very compact and short powertrain through its design.

 

Companies which are interested in future-oriented themes are more than welcome to actively help shape the strategies of the Centre for Systems Engineering.

We are looking forward to joint projects that will be presented at the next conference in 2021.

 

About the conference

The Conference for Wind Power Drives has now been organized the fourth time since 2013. The conference is being held every two years and the latest state of research and technique are going to be presented. We are going to focus on drive trains, pitch and yaw systems of wind turbines.

The CWD 2019 acts as an interdisciplinary platform for knowledge and technology transfer between developers, research scientists and operators. Furthermore, the conference promotes networking between industry and university in the field of wind turbine generator drive trains. The conference has been supported by the Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA), the Research Association for Drive Technology (FVA) and IEEE Power Electronics Society.
