Condition Monitoring System

The goal of this work package is the development of a cross-system condition monitoring system (CMS). With a CMS the operation state of a wind turbine can be determined and supervised. Component damages can thus be detected at an early stage.

Presently existing systems contain sensors to measure the surface vibrations of distinct components such as bearings, the gearbox case or the generator. Additionally, the operation temperature and the electric current flow are monitored. In work package 3 new sensors are implemented and examined in addition to the currently existing sensors. These new sensors are, inter alia, oil particle measurements, acoustic cameras, magneto resistive torque and speed measurement sensors. 

At first the system is calibrated in new condition and with undamaged components. This happens simultaneously to the test runs of the work packages 1, 2 and 4. After finishing the calibration, different components are selectively replaced by damaged components and the test runs are performed again on the test bench.

By comparing the signals, the sensors can be evaluated and a condition monitoring system for overall systems can be developed. In addition, operating expense models are devised in order to determine the optimal point in time for maintenance actions depending on the economic and outer edge conditions.
