Project ISO.Wind (Integrated structure monitoring for onshore wind parks)

An early detection of occurring damages on crucial components of a wind turbine allows a substantial reduction of the maintenance costs and increase its system availability. Currently, almost all existing commercial “Condition Monitoring Systems” (CMS) are focused on monitoring the power train. Structural-Health-Monitoring-Systeme (SHM) which are monitoring the outer structure elements of the turbine are nearly only used in research projects. Passive radar systems evaluate the reflections of radar waves to detected air vehicle which are close to the turbine. That allows a lightning of the wind turbine only if it is needed. However passive radar systems are also able to monitor the vibrations of the outer structure of the wind turbine. The aim of the project ISOWind is to build up a comprehensive Structural-Health-Monitoring-Systeme based on passive radar and to validate it with conventional acceleration sensors and simulation models.

During the research project, the Center for Wind Power Drives will create a multibody simulation model of the wind turbine. Based on the simulation results the requirements and specifications of the SHM System can be defined. Additionally, scalable damage models will be built, to investigate the effect of damages of single parts on the vibration behavior of the outer structure of the whole wind turbine.
