V6 Loads

Current development trend in wind energy is characterised by the installation of wind turbines with increasing rated power output. Higher towers and larger rotor diameters increase rated power leading to an intensification of the load situation on the drive train and the gearbox. Current condition monitoring systems do not record the mechanical loads in all 6 degrees of freedom. Therefore, enabling real-time measurement of the transmission input loads in all 6 degrees of freedom offers numerous possibilities to reduce life cycle costs. The Chair for Wind Power Drives at RWTH Aachen University in cooperation with ZF Wind Power, ZF Friedrichshafen AG, and KU Leuven pursue a method for measuring input loads of wind turbine main gearboxes in all six degrees of freedom. This objective is to be achieved by means of a virtual sensor system using sensors applied to the gearbox supplying real-time capable calculation models. A gearbox condition monitoring system is to be enabled to determine the load situation within the gearbox based on the developed models.
