Design of robust municipal energy system on a basis of renewable energy resources
Due to their high renewable energy potential rural municipalities play a crucial role when it comes to fully adopting the concept of renewable energies, or "Energiewende" as it is known in Germany. So-called "energy municipalities" are mostly aiming for energy production and demand balance, disregarding their actual physical coordination. Therefore it is important to develop and implement structured integral energy systems focusing on physically balanced energy production and demand within the municipality. Local renewable energy demand reduces loads on the transmission network, mitigating grid expansion problems as a result. Due to the complexity of this task, such energy systems usually cannot be developed and implemented by local municipal players. The Chair for Wind Power Drives at RWTH Aachen University in cooperation with two exemplary municipalities and BET Energie pursue a method for consulting German municipalities regarding the setup of demand-oriented and network compatible energy systems on the basis of renewable energies. Municipalities are to be enabled to independently make and implement the necessary conceptual, organisational, economic and technical decisions.
