Development of test rigs
At RWTH Aachen University two new WT system test rigs with different power categories are built up. In the project's first phase an already exisiting universal test bench is configurated for a 1 MW nacelle system test rig.
The second phase covers the entire construction of a 4 MW WT system test rig for the analysis of the dynamic operation behaviour of WT nacelles at the Center for Wind Power Drives at RWTH Aachen University.
To represent realistic system behaviour, dynamic loads are applied on the links rotor flange and grid connection of the nacelle. A hydraulic load application unit is used to introduce bending moments and shear forces from the wind load. The signals for the rotation speed, torque, bending moments and shear forces are gained from synthetic wind fields. For this purpose a real time wind loads model was developed at the Institute of Aerodynamics (AIA), which provides the control references for the system operation on the test rig. On the electric side a real time simulator can represent various states of the electric grid so that e.g. the impact of voltage fluctuations on the dynamic behaviour of a wind turbine can be simulated with the test rig.
