The objective of this research project is to develop a material concept for journal bearings for the use as main bearings in wind turbine generators (WTG). Moreover, in cooperation with research institutes and industry partners the project deliverables will show that layers of hybrid matrix materials, coated by thermal spraying, are suited in particular for large journal bearings. Advantages of journal bearings over conventional roller bearings are, among others, high durability, damping, less installation space and easy replaceability. Hence, the innovative material concept may lead to decrease main bearing’s manufacturing and maintenance costs. The Chair for Wind Power Drives will lead the research activities and contributes its expertise in drivetrain design, simulation, and testing. During the project, several material sample tests and model experiments will define the material characteristics and constantly narrow down the choice of journal bearing materials. The developed optimal material concept will be validated with a full functional demonstrator on a system test bench under realistic wind load and operating conditions.
